High Flow ZL1 Heat Extraction Hood Bracket
The 6th Generation Camaro ZL1's hood is clearly a work of art, and admired by many. Not just for it’s beautiful lines, and converging materials but most all, because it is functional. Unfortunately, GM was required to balance extracting as much heat as possible while minimizing the intrusion of water into the engine bay. The GM solution was a large restrictive water guard. While this design served its purpose, it inevitably constrained the hood's cooling capacity, and worst of all, this limitation has gone largely unaddressed by the aftermarket… until now!
Inspired by the formidable GT4.R race car, we set out to create a sleek, cost-effective solution that delivers quantifiable performance benefits, with a minimalist form factor. We achieved this by replacing the restrictive factory rain guard with our precision-engineered, all-aluminum GMS High Flow Hood Insert Bracket. Doing so will help ZL1 owners unlock a 70% + increase in airflow area allowing for better heat extraction and cooling potential, while maintaining the current carbon insert location and angle. For those weight reduction nerds, this upgrade also sheds approx. 2.5 pounds over the OEM rain guard.
Although the engine bay is built to handle water runoff, we recommend this modification for fair weather driving only. Installation is a breeze, and includes upgraded stainless steel hardware, or you can utilizing all existing factory hardware. The GMS High Flow Hood Insert Bracket is meticulously crafted from thick .125” aluminum, following the natural lines of the hood, and finished with a matte black powder coat finish to maintain a clean, OEM aesthetic.
Underhood Ambient Temperatures measured after a (45 min street / freeway drive with our 900hp ZL1) and a 3 min. idle with hood closed on a 72F day. This was a light drive with moderate acceleration intended to mimic normal driving. Average oil temps were 185F during the test as evidence.
Near Radiator Support (balanced both sides) = 27F Temp Reduction
Near Last Coil Pack (balanced both sides) = 15F Temp Reduction
Surface Temperatures measured once the hood was opened.
Katech 103mm TB = -11F Temp Reduction
DSX Supercharger Lid = 13F Temp Reduction
Katech Cast Valve Covers = 19F Temp Reduction
Coated American Racing Headers = 28F Temp Reduction
And this was with light driving. Higher temp reductions can be expected during hotter days and more extreme driving. Stay tuned for independent track testing results…
The GMS High Flow Hood Bracket is a must have for those who race or drive in warm / hot climates, considering how much heat is produced by the supercharged LT4 engine modified or not. Just another way Griffin Motorsports is working hard to help you keep your ZL1 cool!
This inexpensive upgrade benefits all driving situations, not just on the race track. We have tested this on our 900hp car for over 2,500 miles, speeds up-to 145mph, and several car washes with no issues. Installs in 15 minutes and can easily be reverted back to OEM for harsh weather seasonal driving.
